The sustainability ethic has been identified by the United Nations as a “blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future” and is broadly expressed in economic, social, and environmental dimensions. As regards engineering practice and the public interest, the NSPE Code of Ethics for Engineers states that “Engineers are encouraged to adhere to the principles of sustainable development in order to protect the environment for future generations.” This two-hour presentation explores ethical challenges and opportunities of sustainable engineering work and will consider real-life examples from selected case study opinions of the NSPE Board of Ethical Review.
