Member Spotlight - Brittany Rouse
Brittany Rouse, P.E.TSPE Northeast TX ChapterProject Manager, Kimley-HornWhy are you involved in TSPE? Several years ago, my supervisor recommended that I join a professional organization for networking and relationship building. I chose TSPE because they met fairly close to where my office was located and I was impressed by how welcoming everyone was in our small chapter. After attending my first meeting, I was hooked, and asked to be considered for future leadership opportunities. My favorite part of being part of TSPE is connecting with the other chapter members, participating in industry tours and chapter events and learning more about the other professional engineering disciplines through technical presentations at chapter meetings. I love participating in scholarship fundraising events and volunteer and outreach events like MATHCOUNTS and am really excited to become more involved is some of the other aspects TSPE has to offer, like professional development and legislative affairs.
How do you manage work/life balance? I am an obsessive list-maker, both in my personal and professional life. Before I leave work each evening, I try to set aside 5 minutes to specify the top 3 tasks that I’d like to accomplish the following day and update any tasks added or completed that day on my “master” to-do list. That allows me to close the chapter on my work day and switch my focus to my personal home life. When I’m home, my favorite things to do are to spend time with my son, Oliver, and unwind with my husband by watching reality TV or reading. My husband and I also try to have a minimum of one trip or event on the calendar each month that we are looking forward to. That motivates me to work hard throughout the month leading up to the trip and then I strive to unplug as much as possible while away from work. I am a true believer that sometimes work wins and sometimes your personal life wins. It is all a balancing act! Bio
