Emily Fisher, P.E.

TSPE Brazos Chapter | Director of Public Works, City of College Station

Why are you involved in TSPE?

I joined TSPE at the recommendation of a coworker, Susan Monnat, P.E. She is truly a great persuader when it comes to recruiting for membership. We have a small chapter, but what I have gained over the years from the organization far outweighs the size. I served as president of our chapter in 2017-2018 (also thanks to Susan) and I am a graduate of the PE Leadership Institute Class 11.  Not only have I learned invaluable skills that have prepared and assisted me in my professional roles, but I have also met so many dedicated and amazing engineers. TSPE has provided me access to a network of incredible people and continues to develop me as a leader and professional engineer.

How do you manage work/life balance?

As a busy mom, work/life balance sometimes feels like an unreachable goal. Two things I try to always keep in mind - trying not to hold myself to an unattainable expectation and doing my best everyday (although doing my best looks different day to day). My harshest critic is myself, so stepping back and giving myself some grace has allowed me to stress less at the end of the day. Furthermore, if I am always trying my best, I know I have put in the maximum effort, and I cannot control what others do. This also lessens the stress at the end of the day. Both help me leave my work at work and enjoy my time away from the office. I don't think you truly ever reach a balance, but putting in the effort goes a long way.

Bio

I was born and raised in College Station, Texas. After graduating from Texas A&M University, I spent several years in the private sector as a project manager in land development and utility district services in the Houston area. Nearly twelve years ago, I decided to switch to the public sector and began a career with the City of College Station. In 2021, I became the Public Works Director, overseeing various city services including Solid Waste and Recycling, Streets, Drainage, Irrigation, and Landscaping Maintenance, Fleet Maintenance, and Traffic Engineering and Systems.

I truly enjoy being able to serve the city that I reside in with my husband, two boys, and black lab. In my free time I enjoy playing pickleball (a new hobby), attending my kids sports/school events, and following Formula 1 racing.
